Reading a gold chart — the basics

Charts can look intimidating, but a few simple ideas explain most of what you see. This is a plain-language primer for understanding price moves — not a system for trading them.

1 · The candle

Each “candle” sums up four prices for a slice of time: where price opened, where it closed, and the highest and lowest points it touched (the thin lines, called wicks). If it closed higher than it opened, the candle is usually green; if lower, red. A row of candles is simply price over time.

2 · Floor and ceiling (support & resistance)

Price often pauses at levels where buyers or sellers keep stepping in. A ceiling (resistance) is a level price keeps failing to break above; a floor (support) is one it keeps bouncing up from. These aren’t magic — they’re memory: many people remember those prices and act around them.

3 · Trend

An uptrend is a series of higher highs and higher lows; a downtrend is lower highs and lower lows. When neither holds, price is moving sideways (“ranging”). The trend matters far more than any single candle.

4 · Timeframes

The same gold can look like it’s crashing on a 5-minute chart and rising on a yearly one. Short timeframes are noisy; long timeframes show the real direction. If you’re buying gold to hold, the daily and weekly picture matters much more than the minute chart.

Important. Chart patterns describe what sometimes happened before — they never guarantee what happens next. Most people who trade short-term on these signals lose money. Auriq is about informed, long-term buying, not day-trading. Nothing here is financial advice.

Bonus · Gold purity: 24K vs 22K

Karat measures how much of the metal is pure gold. 24K is about 99.9% pure; lower numbers add other metals for strength. Purer gold is softer, more deeply yellow, and pricier per gram.

22K91.6%916High-purity jewellery
21K87.5%875Everyday Gulf jewellery
18K75.0%750Durable & gem-set designs

Rule of thumb: buying to store value → choose 24K bars or coins (lowest premium, best buy-back). Buying to wear → 22K or 21K balances colour and durability. Always ask the per-gram rate and the making charge (ujrah) separately, and keep the receipt — buy-back is weight × purity.
